October 2021 | Marble Castello

Castello (sometimes spelled as Castelo) marble flat cut wood veneer has light yellow to olive brown heartwood, along with a fine, uniform texture and high contrast. The term marble comes from the highly distinctive striped pattern; we also have plain Castello available. Plain Castello is a fairly plentiful species, but the marbled grain cut gives it a very visually appealing aesthetic. This wood is very strong, elastic, and polishes smoothly and beautifully.

The tree and its veneer uses

This South American native reaches heights of 20 to 30 feet with trunk diameters only between 1 and 3 feet. Our current veneer inventory consists of a variety of appropriate panel lengths, ranging from 7-12’+ flat cut.

Architectural millwork, cabinetry and furniture, as well as accent pieces are all great choices for Marble Castello veneer. Its olive tones bring natural warmth to many environments, including hospitality, educational settings, and more. Castello is also often used in the making of ukuleles, remaining a popular species for that.

September 2021 | English Brown Oak

Short video clip showing English brown oak Bohlke veneer sample slip matched, book matched, butt and book matched.

Rich browns and beautiful grain

English brown oak veneer comes from two species native to Europe: Quercus robur and Quercus petraea. These trees usually reach heights of 80-115 feet with trunk diameters between 4-6 feet, although they can be considerably larger.

When quarter cut, this species is a rich, dark brown and displays a tremendous medullary ray effect. This richness of color is an after effect of the live tree being attacked by a fungus, which causes sap streaks where the mushrooms do not spread. The result is a strong visual effect; this wood is then generally quarter cut to highlight its heavy flaking. Rest assured that once the wood is dried, the fungus dies, and there is no further decay of the wood.

English brown oak imparts a warm, “old world” atmosphere to architectural installations. Fine furniture, panels, doors and accent pieces can all benefit from the use of this veneer. Other common uses for English brown oak veneer include cabinetry, as well as both yacht and aircraft interiors.

Lebanon Cedar (also called Lebanese Cedar) is quarter cut when used for wood veneer. Its coloring is usually a consistent yellow-orange with brown streaks, and has straight grain with some deviation due to knots. The outer growth rings are wavy or ripped, adding to the character. Medium to coarse texture with a moderate natural luster.

Architectural millwork, panels and cabinetry, as well as doors and furniture, are all common applications for Lebanon Cedar veneer; yacht and aircraft design industries also utilize this beautiful wood.

The tree and Lebanon Cedar workability

Cedar of Lebanon grows in the mountainous regions of the Eastern Mediterranean basin and typically reaches 100-130 feet in height with trunk diameters around 5-7 feet. The wood veneer and lumber is highly valued due to consistent color, straight grain and historical significance. In fact, the country of Lebanon features Lebanon Cedar on its national flag.

Cedar of Lebanon wood cuts easily and the lumber planes smoothly. It is easy to work with hand and machine tools alike, turning, gluing and finishing well; also takes a wide range of finishes.

June 2021 | Brazilian Lacewood

Close up photo of Brazilian Lacewood lumber used as flooring in Bohlke Veneer main office.
Brazilian Lacewood used as flooring.

Quarter cut Brazilian Lacewood veneer can be yellow-brown with reddish tones to a light pink, and has a silvery sheen. This species can also can range from a more creamy yellow to salmon. The grain has a medium to heavy flake, which comes from the pronounced medullary ray common to the species. The flake pattern can run small to large and is dependent on how it has formed inside the log.

Lacewood is usually only used for borders or on small areas of furniture because the pattern is “busy.” The highly figured grain can make a strong design statement in architectural applications, however.

Architectural panels, millwork, musical instruments and cabinetry are all possible applications. When a lighter color is desired, flaky oak and quartered white oak veneers are good alternatives.

M. Bohlke Lacewood inventory

We have a variety of veneer panel sizes available in this species, as well as 3/4, 4/4 and 8/4 square edge lumber. For a fun reference to visualize how flakes can range in size, imagine the flake pattern as the size of individual rice krispies to the larger corn flakes cereal.

May 2021 | Purpleheart

May 2021 | Purpleheart

Unique splash of color fits perfectly with Spring

Purpleheart is native to Central and South America and is sometimes referred to as Amaranth or Violet Wood. Gorgeous violet tones are a fit perfect for Spring, and the species is tremendously popular for furniture and other designs calling for a unique splash of color year round. When freshly cut, the heartwood of purpleheart appears purple brown. Upon exposure the wood becomes a deep eggplant purple. With further age and exposure to UV light, the wood becomes dark brown with hints of purple. We highly recommend using an UV inhibiting finish on the wood, which can help slow and minimize this shift in color.

Aircraft and yacht interiors, as well as architectural millwork including panels, furniture and cabinetry are all popular uses for purpleheart. When set side-by-side or combined with lighter species, this wood provides a splash of unexpected color along with natural contrast.

In addition to its unique color, purpleheart also has excellent strength properties, and is used in applications where strength is important — a wood for both form and function.

April 2021 | European Sycamore

quarter cut european sycamore wood veneer with fiddleback figure
Quarter cut

European Sycamore wood veneer is naturally quite white when freshly cut and in fact, it is one of the whitest woods in the world. Over time the veneer naturally darkens slightly to a creamy yellow white. This species can be quartered or flat cut, plain or highly figured. Fiddleback figure is most common for quarter cut, as seen to the left.

You may sometimes hear European Sycamore called European or Great maple because it is actually a maple by genus. These trees reach heights of 100 feet with trunk diameters usually around 5 feet.

Common uses for European Sycamore veneer

Architectural and acoustic panels, cabinetry, furniture and millwork are all common applications. European Sycamore can be dyed to a variety of colors, including silver-gray. This color is quite popular for furniture and cabinetry, and produces a beautiful shimmer. Finishing with a clear coat is also a highly popular choice when the wood’s natural light yellow white and inherent warmth is most desired.
