February 2020 | Satinwood

satinwood wood veneer

February 2020 Wood of the Month | Commonly called Ceylon Satinwood, Satinwood veneer and lumber has fine texture and a high natural luster. The colors range from a rich and bright yellow to a deeper golden hue. Darker streaks throughout are typical.

satinwood wood veneer

Quarter cut Satinwood veneer has incredibly desirable mottled, ropey or ribbon figure. Aptly named, Satinwood figure can appear almost three dimensional and looks very similar to the lustrous satin fabric.

Because the trunk diameters are usually around 12 inches, the veneer is typically quite narrow. Some trees grow to larger diameters and we do have some larger dimensions available. In raw form, this wood has a light chalky powder that dissipates after sanding.

A little background: Chloroxylon swietenia and Zanthoxylum flavum are the only species that are true Satinwood. This family includes Citrus trees, like Lemon and Lime trees. Other woods like Movingui and Yellowheart are sometimes called satinwood, but they are not part of the same family.

Uses: Traditionally used in cabinetry, although it has many applications in today’s design world. These include architectural millwork, inlaying, fine furniture, decorative paneling, as well as automotive and aircraft interiors.

Lumber availability: In addition to quarter cut and flat cut veneer, we also have Satinwood lumber in square edge form. Our inventory currently consists of 4/4, 6/4 and 8/4 FAS&BTR.

January 2020 | Cocobolo

January 2020 Wood of the Month | We are kicking off the New Year with one gorgeous wood veneer: Cocobolo (sometimes called Nicaragua Rosewood). Every log has its own unique color palette. The heartwood colors can range from shades of brown with black or purple streaks to yellow, orange or deep red. The sapwood is a very light yellow in comparison to the rich heartwood.

A true Rosewood: Cocobolo is dense, hard and durable. It stains and finishes beautifully and easily. It also has a high oil content, a common characteristic of Rosewood.

Uses: Fine furniture, both acoustic and architectural paneling, and in luxury aircraft and yachts. Most notably, its acoustic properties make it a prime choice for musical instruments, especially guitars.

Contact us to learn more about Cocobolo, our extensive inventory and how we can help with your project. If this look isn’t exactly what you or your client are looking for, our team can help you on your wood veneer search.

December 2019 | Wood of the Month

Limba Frake is a highly decorative wood veneer.

Limba Frake is indisputably unique from log to log and always exquisite in appearance. Some of our available logs have figure, others exemplify great structure and some have broken stripe.

Colors range from a light yellow-brown to a more golden brown with irregular dark brown or black streaks. Limba Frake has a moderately coarse texture and is highly lustrous. It takes both stains and finishes well.

It is no surprise that this stunning veneer is prized for architectural use, acoustic panels, and musical instrument design, especially electric guitars and drums. Other common applications include high-end custom furniture, millwork and cabinetry, as well as both interior yacht building and aircraft applications.

Our team is confident that one of our available Limba Frake logs will speak to you and your project team. Contact us to learn more about our inventory and how we can help with your next project.

November 2019 | Wood of the Month

November 2019 WOM | Cerejeira wood veneer is our team’s pick for November.

While Cerejeira Crotch wood veneer is very popular in our industry, we think that flat cut Cerejeira deserves recognition, too.

Cerejeira is a South American wood that emits a sweet smell, similar to vanilla or cumiran. Heartwood color ranges from a generally uniform golden-yellow to a light brown, sometimes with an orange hue. Its grain is interlocked and it has a medium to high natural luster with a medium to coarse texture.

Common uses: High-end luxury furniture and store fixtures/accents, as well as architectural millwork, panels and cabinetry.

This specie takes both stains and finishes well.

Contact us to learn how we can help you with your project specifications.

About the tree: The trees are large, typically reaching heights of up to 82-100 feet, with trunk diameters between 20-35 inches. (Source: tropicaltimber.info)

Our 2019 Lumber Open House | All Bark, Some Bites

Our 2019 lumber open house this past Saturday was a hit! We opened our doors to the communities of Fairfield and Hamilton, raising $500 for Animal Friends Humane Society (AFHS) in Hamilton, OH (@animalfriendshumanesociety) plus a wonderful amount of item donations.

All of the item donations atop our M. Bohlke Corp. flatbed. We saw lots of cat and dog food, treats and toys, paper towels, new towels, litter, puppy pads, cleaning supplies and office supplies for the AFHS staff.

The $500 was raised from our Walnut live edge raffle… and our winner is Brooklyn Pierce. Congrats to Brooklyn and family!

Brooklyn Pierce with her 7.75′ long x 28″ wide Walnut live edge slab.

Brooklyn’s grandfather is a woodworker and they have a few ideas in mind already. They are leaning toward a desk or shelving for trophies. Brooklyn is browsing live edge slab projects for inspiration and expressed interest in working together with her Grandpa once they pick a project.. or two.

Special thank you to Trooper and family from The Trooper Telegraph (@thetroopertelegraph) for being apart of our event. 🐾

During our open house, the M. Bohlke Lumber team gave tours of our warehouses where we store our imported square edge, live edge slabs, boules and more.
Our visitors enjoyed trying Hammerschlagen, a nail driving challenge with German roots.
Our team was kept busy playing Hammerschlagen all throughout the open house.
Families enjoyed corn hole, Hammerschlagen, visiting with Trooper and the Golden Goose food truck.

Thank you to everyone who came to see us at M. Bohlke Lumber and for your support!

October 2019 | Wood of the Month

October 2019 WOM | Pronounce Izombe as if you are saying “i-zombie.” This versatile wood veneer deserves the spotlight, and this October is a fitting month for its showcase.

Izombe wood veneer uses vary; common applications are interior millwork, furniture and doors, as well as yachts and aircraft interiors.

Its heartwood is golden yellow-orange with darker brown streaks throughout. These streaks can be nervous and wavy, while the figure is of mottle or ribbon type. The texture is very fine and even, and the grain is generally straight.

A clear finish is crisp all on its own, and adding a light brown to auburn stain keeps the defined grain lines brilliant, as seen here:

Izombe wood veneer stain finishes

Over time, all woods will fade and possibly change color with exposure to light. But Izombe is a little different than other veneer, just like its unique name. In addition to having a luxurious finish, of all the woods with similar color, Izombe wood veneer changes color the least over time.

Logs are typically between 35,000-50,000 square feet with nice sequencing and good dimension.

Does the aesthetic of Izombe fit your upcoming project and specifications? Contact us today and our knowledgeable team will answer any questions you may have.

About the tree: Typically reaches 120 feet with a straight bole. Trunk diameters are generally 3-4 feet. (Source: A Guide to Useful Woods of the World, Second Edition)

September 2019 | Wood of the Month

September 2019 WOM | Paldao wood veneer comes in a wide variety of colors. The quarter cut featured here has a stripey aesthetic and is light brown, almost tan, with darker streaks throughout. When flat cut, gray-brown heartwood shows with a hint of green and darker streaks. The grain is interlocked and is sometimes wavy.

These trees are found in southeast Asia, as well as on the islands of the southwest Pacific. They commonly grow to 120 feet with very high buttresses that may extend up to 20 feet! (Source: A Guide to Useful Woods of the World, Second Edition)

In addition to both flat and quarter cut wood veneer, we also carry Paldao in our lumber department – currently we have 8/4 FAS & BTR square-edge lumber and table tops! Contact us if you’d like to learn more about Paldao and how we can help you with your project and specifications.

Fun fact: Paldao was once viewed in awe in remote parts of the Phillipines. Read more from Wood Magazine about Paldao’s interesting history.
