Because of proper management, this forest has mineral free soil, annual rainfall and proper drainage. As a result, these trees have beautiful consistent color, as well as tight uniform grain structure. These old growth trees average 20-30 growth rings per inch. Selectively cut at peak maturity and in accordance with proper forest management.

Highly prized in Africa for carvings, boat building, as well as windows and doors, flooring and furniture. African Padauk is often referred to as Bloodwood due to red sap emerging from the tree after being cut. Its heartwood color can vary, ranging from a pale pink orange to a deep brown red. Considered very durable and resistant to bug attack, this wood has been used outdoors for centuries.

Upon exposure the wood becomes a deep eggplant purple. With further age and exposure to UV light, the wood becomes dark brown with hints of purple. This shift in color can be slowed and minimized by using a UV inhibiting finish on the wood.

In addition to its unique color, Purple Heart also has excellent strength properties, and is used in applications where strength is important—a wood for both form and function. It grows in a limited area on the Pacific coast of the northwestern United States, where heavy rainfall and cool, damp air create a unique environment for these trees. Redwood live edge heartwood color can range from a light pink brown to a deep red brown. Sapwood is a pale white/yellow. These trees can live up to 2,000 years and have branches up to 5 feet in diameter.
