Logs

Making fine veneer

Manfred Bohlke was a log buyer for a European timber company when he came to the United States. When he went out on his own, his biggest advantage was his knowledge of trees and familiarity with the woods. Although Manfred did not build his veneer mill until a later date, his understanding of logging and the forest allowed the veneer production to flourish – “you cannot make good veneer from bad logs. You must know the good timber areas from the bad ones.”

Veneer quality logs

This knowledge and philosophy lives on. With up to fourteen veneer machines to feed for each day’s production, log procurement is a top priority for M. Bohlke Veneer. Our log and timber buyers are located throughout the Midwest, east coast, and southern regions, and are constantly exploring their territories for the finest timber for our veneer production.

With our strong purchasing force of raw material, we are often able to acquire additional veneer logs to sell. Because we also purchase a high volume of standing timber directly in the woods at tree length, we often accumulate logs not fit for veneer, but suitable for lumber production.

Main veneer species

Our main veneer species for production are Walnut, White Oak, Red Oak, Cherry and Maple. We tend to have these types of logs for sale the most often. We also have availability in Red Elm, Ash, Poplar, and additional species. These species are available in grades of 4 sides-clear, 3 sides-clear and some 2 sides-clear.

When our log buyers search and purchase tree lots for our veneer quality timber, we often come across timber that is not suitable for veneer production. Instead, this material is desirable for lumber and other uses.

We often sell these logs to sawmills across the United States, as well as around the world. We can offer 4 sides-clear, 3 sides-clear and some 2 sides-clear material in several indigenous species.

*Log prices and availability are subject to a variety of conditions. Log prices may change from season to season depending on weather, inventory and market price.

Our log buyers at M. Bohlke Corp. are always looking to purchase new material for our manufacturing mill. They specifically look for forest grown timber, generally on 20+ acres of land. Currently, we are predominantly buying Walnut, White Oak, and Red Oak veneer quality logs.

A quick tip: If the trunks of your trees are at least 16″ in diameter at breast height, they may be good candidates for our manufacturing purposes.

Do you own a stand of trees that you think may be suitable for veneer that you wish to sell? Please feel free to send us information and pictures. Photographs tell our timber buyers a lot of what they need to know! We will put you in touch with a certified forestry service to examine the lot if necessary. If the stand of trees doesn’t seem to fit our needs, we are happy to help point you in the right direction of how and where to sell.
