Grading the Log:
  1. Select the species required.
  2. Determine the lengths required.
  3. Decide on the veneer cut desired.
  4. Select grade and price suitable for current market conditions
  5. Scale the logs.
  6. Sort and check-in logs purchased in the field.
  7. Confirm the purchase grade to the production requirements.
  8. Tag each flitch with a unique production number.
The Sawmill:

It is in the Sawmill that we:

  1. Debark the log.
  2. Shape the log.
  3. Reduce the butt.
Flitching the Log:

This is the second phase of production. The log is rotated until the cut lines, which are established in the log yard, are in perfect alignment.

The logs are then either cut in half for slicer production or are cut into fourths for rift slicing on the half round machine.

Cooking the Log
  • Hot water is ramped up to 80-90 degrees Celsius.
  • Like a chef's recipe, cooking times are closely kept industry secrets and vary by specie.
  • Temperature and time are critical factors for determining veneer color.
